PC Help

I offer on-site or telephone help for those of you with Windows 9x, ME or XP (home & pro).  Single computers or small networks can be configured, upgraded or repaired.  Remember, if you have WindowsXP, you can email me a request for remote assistance and I can access your computer from mine.  Call me to find out how.

As of January 30, 2007 Windows Vista will be in the stores.  Many new computers from major manufacturers came with a "voucher" for a free upgrade to Vista but shipped with Win XP.  Almost without exception, the upgrade is for the most basic version of Vista.  To get the full benefits of Vista, you really need at least the Home Premium version which means you'll have to buy it.  However, that new computer you bought may not be powerful enough to use the new -- and impressive -- graphical user interface (GUI).  HERE is a comparison of the versions.

Another issue will be upgrading to Vista instead of doing a clean install of the OS.  Vista has several problems associated with an in place upgrade and I DON'T recommend anything but a clean install.  Please call me before you buy Vista so we can discuss an install on your computer.  Also, no matter what you might have heare, you CAN do a clean install with an Upgrade disk.  Contact me to find out how.  Vista requires a LOT of processor power (1.5 ghz), memory (1 gig or more) and graphics card power (256MB of high speed graphics RAM) in addition to 6 gigabytes of hard disk space for the OS alone.  XP requires 2 gigs of space.  Your computer might not be capable of using Vista without some major upgrades.  Keep in mind that Microsoft designed Vista to encourage you to buy a new, more powerful computer.  You may not really need to have Vista and older programs and applications that worked on XP or 98 may not even work on the new OS.  Check out Windows Upgrade Advisor for some important information.

Here are some more links for Vista information from Computer World.  If you subscribe to Scot's Newsletter (link below), this is the kind of info you can recieve:

Computer Tune-Ups

Computers, whether they're old or new, need periodic updating and cleaning of the operating system.  Viruses and spy ware need to be removed and your computer needs to be protected from them.  So called "maintenance" software programs usually cause more problems than they solve.  Have a real person get your computer running like new ... or better!

Friendly Personal Service

I think everyone should have a rewarding experience using their computers.  It's important that your computer serves YOU.  I'm here to serve you and treat each machine as though it were my own.  Give me a call and we'll discuss solutions and prices.

A NOTE ON VIRUS WARNINGS
I've noticed several hoax virus warnings making the rounds in emails lately.  I urge everyone to investigate these "warnings" before taking any actions like modifying your computer or sending to "everyone in your address book".  One of the best web sites I've found is Hoaxbusters .  You owe it to yourself to check them out.
